minimal wave: both a genre of underground diy electronic music from north america and europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. the minimal wave tapes is the first official anthology of minimal wave music from this label. most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. they ve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by minimal waves veronica vasicka and stones throws peanut butter wolf.

playing and singing together since their school days in west sussex, smoke fairies (jessica davies & katherine blamire) create ethereal, dark and haunting left of center folk and blues songs wrapped in beautiful harmonies with the occasional psychedelic flourish. following an ep and two singles, they now release their first for third man records. the songs gastown and the river song were produced by jack white (white stripes / dead weather)!

circus company welcomes a new artist on the label: the homewreckers. named after a track by southern soul legend sam dees, the production collective from germany has been moving and breaking new ground between detroit techno, abstract funk and melancholic disco music since 1995. their debut album amercian ruhr has been released on unique records in 2008 and creates an absolutely distinctive sound which seems to come straight out of a from a feverish dream populated by the ghostlike figures of larry graham, juan atkins, frank hutter, bernard edwards, erik b or al green. the not my business ep perfectly shows how the homewreckers flow on these two original tracks. you feel the funk, you feel detroit and you feel a deep and unique sense of music. cherry on the cake, you got a remix from san francisco based artist dave aju who is back on the label after his much acclaimed album open wide released in 2008. not my business isnt their first shoot on the label as they were already part of last months snuggle & slap circus company compilation with a brilliant live-version of chicago urban blues.

classic sounding track by two long going and respected techno heads.. fabrice lig and titonton. these guys take it back to the early nineties when techno was still fresh and new... the days that titonton and dan curtin were debuting with their sophisticated techno sound. raw funky 909 percussion, bleepy analogue synths and great warm string sounds and beautiful melodies. purist techno tracks that never go out of style and reminds the old blokes why we loved techno in that period so much. and it shows the young cats that there is more then the standard dj tool techno! beanfield is on remix duty here... and he delivers an updated modern dancefloor friendly house version with a great string section that reminds a bit of knights of the jaguar and a killer bassline after the break. check!

label chief guy gerber returns with a stunning 12 inch double ep on his own >supplement facts records<. all seven original mixes in this release were written and produced during the summer of 2009 and each one captures a particular aspect of this period for guy. summer time meant busy time this year! apart from touring and being based in ibiza for his weekly residence at space, guy managed to find studio time to work on his album (scheduled for 2010) and this release. my invisible romance is an intimate glance into the seemingly borderless music production world of guy gerber. whilst delivering gerbers signature production style this release also surprises with its romantic elements and as usual he teases the listener with his trademark dream-like adaptations. the inspiration for this release came from guys regular performances and majorly from the time spent on the road- as a guest artist in friends studios and from his work in >improvised studios<. >my invisible romance< is a release close to guy gerbers chest, filled with emotions and surprises- a truly intimate collection of musical works

palette recordings celebrates its 13 year anniversary with a release by the duo that started it all for the label. no giant mix compilation or collection of remixes, just another example of what has built the foundation of palette over the last 13 years. john tejada & arian leviste have been collaborating for over 18 years now. with this release the duo in a way come full circle, combining some of their oldest production techniques with newer ones. its been a long road for these 2 seeing styles and trends change, equipment and technology come and go over the years, but what has remained a constant is their vision of electronic music. >messenger< with its subtle intro of modular synths and rhythmic pads breaks out of its sinister drop full force into a multi dimensional crowd pleaser. the stabs continue to build energy while layered drum programming and modulating synth lines escalate the tracks energy. on the flip, >observer< continues with a fierce pace that harkens back to the days of palette 4, combining vintage synth stabs and drum machines recreating that classic vibe which is gaining such momentum again these days. the difference here is these guys were around at the time already releasing music that would garner them such high acclaim over the years.

all the way from new zealand to the urban landscapes of berlin, simon beeston is a man who likes diversity. this is not just evident in his choice of residence, but also in his musical output. following an ep on highgrade digital and a track on our various artists vol. vi record, simon now presents dusty back room, his first solo 12inch release on highgrade. the ep opens with the title track dusty back room, a track of strings and stabs, and a sound not exactly typical of previous highgrade releases. but when the music comes with such compelling energy and provocative atmosphere, were prepared to make an exception. new zealand meets berlin as we cast an eye over green landscapes and ocean swells, while the bumpy groove intoxicicates us with its magic spell. that simon beeston is a man of great contrast is clearly evident on the b-side with neon cringe and cymbolic. the percussive heat of the club brings us back from the organic landscape of his homeland and into the neon lights of the night. neon cringe resonates with a healthy dose of acid pump, while cymbolic provides a bass driven journey complete with cut up vocals and blistering cymbal rolls. this is a release that richly deserves its round number: highgrade number 70. especially with the addition of the bonus digital track tough luck, another highlight all of its own.

a classically-trained jazz virtuoso and national rock n roll hero in argentina, gutis double 12inch pack for desolat will leave you in no doubt of his ability to twist a snaking groove into something echoingly hypnotic. the tracks contained here are already a favourite in the record boxes of artists like loco dice, carl cox and marco carola, while gutis life story could itself be the subject of a story by jorge luis borges: >i leave to several futures (not to all) my garden of forking paths<. just two years after his first live sets in europe, desolat is proud to present gutis las cosas que no se tocan. the beats follow guti across continents: mr good vibes was composed in a hotel room in stuttgart after an argument with a friend, while the serious dancefloor vibes of sasa, the hustler and ieuuu were channelled in martinez studio. ieuuu and the hustler feature slices of glamorous, haunting vocals by jayson walker, a british singer that guti discovered on myspace. and sasa boasts gutis own vocal touches. meanwhile, the track aguanile is inspired by one of his favourite melodies as a child, one that he’s collected many versions of. the last track on the release, el campeon, reaches a bittersweet ending in the wide open space between percussive trills and a cut-out refrain, inspired by gutis favourite latin storylines of broken hearts and pain.

drums have been discovered in almost every part of the world. drums first appeared, however, in excavation from the neolithic era. the oldest recorded drum is from 6000 bc. mesopotamian ruins contain small cylindrical drums that are as old as 3000 bc. egyptian tombs have yielded small drums used for ceremonies. several caves in peru contain wall markings depicting drums in various aspects of societal life. it is strongly suspected that indian drums from the middle east are as old as 5000 bc. the american indians used a series of wood and gourd drums for their celebrations and some of these drums are still used in ceremonies today. drums were not always used for music. in africa, where music is simply an interpretation of everyday life in sound, drums were used as speech. simply a pattern of beats played in a certain way could communicate vast amounts of information. jeff mills creates the drummer (pm-022). 6 track 12 vinyl ep. mills communicates through only a classic roland tr-808 drum machine, exclusively made for the purpose maker/axis. each track dedicated for the masters of the art form of drumming like: neil peart, billy cobham, buddy rich and others, mills explores how drum patterns and rhythms remain communicative on a higher level that has endured through evolution of humanity.

with smashing contributions by electro lord legowelt from dirty brown the hague and bleep addict garçon taupe from the bourgeois slums of amsterdam, narrominded presents the fourth installment in its renowned split lp series. both sides of this split lp comprise a whole ep in length, and the contributions have in common that they are both deeply rooted in electro music.
on garçon taupes wittenburg ep, eighties infected drum computer beats and heavy bass lines pave the way for some rather cheerful and unpretentious melodies. the five tracks were mixed to tape at rude 66s triple six lounge studio, and reveal influences from electronic pioneers like yellow magic orchestra and mantronix, to todays acid freaks like luke vibert and like a tim. the end result is a catchy mixture of electro and acid.
legowelt explores the darker corners of electronic music in four tracks leaning on eerie vocals and grungy electro beats. his land rovers in astrophysics ep takes us to mysterious environments. we are spacing out on the force of the stars, the universe, etc, and dancing to hypnotic drums on a mystical trip to pago pago west samoa. legowelt not only knows how to to satisfy a dance floor, but is also capable of deeply appealing to the listeners imagination.

badmotorfinger got lost amid the blockbuster success of nevermind and ten (all were released around the same time). but the fact is that, though they re all great records, badmotorfinger is much less accessible by comparison. not that it isnt melodic, but it also sounds twisted and gnarled, full of dissonant riffing, impossible time signatures, howling textural solos, and weird, droning tonalities. its surprisingly cerebral and arty music for a band courting mainstream metal audiences, but it attacks with scientific precision. part of that is due to the presence of new bassist ben shepherd, who gives the band its thickest rhythmic foundation yet and, moreover, immediately shoulders the departed hiro yamamotos share of songwriting duties. but its apparent that the whole band has greatly expanded the scope of its ambitions. and badmotorfinger fulfills them, pulling all the different threads of the bands sound together into a mature, confident, well written record. this is heavy, challenging hard rock full of intellectual sensibility and complex band interplay.

who would have thought it, techno djs playing filtered house... well, earlier this year it happened, and it was pittos >feelin< that caused the sensation. the original and superb dub, has gone on to become one of the biggest club releases of 2009.whispered rumour of a remix package has abound, and these were confirmed with early copies of a district one remix finding support amongst the dutch elite.well now its time to confirm the rumour, and not only bring you the district one remix, but bolster the package with a devastating remix from the master, joris voorn. edwin oosterwal and voorns rejected label keep on delivering the hits. long may it continue!

active since 1997 and one of norways leading exponents of experimentalelectronic music, alog is the duo of espen sommer eide and dag-are haugan, mainstays at the rune grammofon label.
alogs unique, hybrid sound has since developed through four albums that have unfurled a series of abstract yet accessible, self-contained sound worlds, each animated with their own internal logic, mixing a wide variety of bothelectronic and acoustic sources into something warm, intricate and organic.
alog embrace the freedom to flit and root in the cracks between strands of minimalism, electronica, post-rock, improv and vernacular music, merging woozy, stuttering electronica (a la oval or nobukazu takemura), with rich, shoegazey guitars, freeform improvisation, scandinavian folk, field recording and the masterful editing and soundscaping of electroacoustic composition.
astral social club is the project of prolific scottish-born neil campbell, apivotal figure on the uk post-punk underground, with a vast catalogue and numerous collaborations.
a member of both matthew bowers total and sunroof! projects, he appeared on three of the latters albums before helping to form the hugely influential and prolific (over 40 releases) leeds-based drone/psych-rock outfit vibracathedral orchestra in 1998.
campbell left vco in 2006 to go solo as astral social club, under which moniker he has released a number of albums (on labels like vhf, important, qbico, textile) and an ever-increasing stream of self-released cdrs in alimited edition series of volumes (currently up to #19).
the three tracks here were recorded by campbell, john clyde-evans, paul walsh and spider stacy.

helmut dubnitzky with his second release on yellow tail, his successful releases and remixes alike were published under labels such as kiddaz fm, glückskind or spinclub. with his own brand brise he gains a lot of respect and support in a very short time. turn the speakers up for helmut dubnitzky s -runaway ep

bodo elsel has only done a handful of records and the two that i have known and loved since 1998 were put out on playhouse, the excellent housey sister-label of mighty klang elektronik. one track in particular, discount baby, has always stood out in my mind as a high water mark in the sacred art of groove (you may have heard of it). punchy accents and resonant bass layered with trippy vocal loops, its dubby acid house of the highest order, made by a mysterious german lego-master, who the a&r team of mike mind and thomas st shindig managed to coax back into activity.
it only took bodo a year to answer mr. minds email, but he eventually delivered three amazing tracks... >haustier< revitalizes piano house. >mai< is incredible, and >mein haus< is one of the top few all-time expressions of the greatness/meaning of germany, putting it in the fine company of the autobahn, sven väth and christmas-market schwein. nice wibes!!
the icing on the cake was that bodo made it very clear he wanted no part in royalties or any of that business crap... he just wanted 42 copies of the record. yes. 42.
we were so inspired by all of this that we decided to put this record out in a different way for us that just feels right this time.... if you want to find out just how good the >mein haus ep< is, you will have no choice but to buy a copy of the 12 inch because this one is a vinyl exclusive!

>mustang< is a perfect techno track, it sums up what a whole techno night could be like. it is a fast track but also a deep cool track, when the chords join in one gets close to heaven. it is also a track that changes gear and has a nicefeeling for controlling the pace perfectly. the unbeatable cool alex under beat and 3d sound experiments that sound as if ice cubes were rotating in a tumbler make it a super track.
>charger< is a massive track! the track seems to suck up air to created a vacuum and also sounds a bit as if there was a problem with the ignition of the charger! once it gets going it is indeed a heavy rocking track!>firebird< is a fat sounding house track, which can be plaid by house djs as well as techno djs using a cool walking bassline and a super tight slapping snare and cool house vocals on top of it! starting housy the track develops into a hi energy, appegiator driven track showing alex unders talent for moving genres skilfully from one end to the other! this is a great track!

we had some unfinished business, so after long deliberation her is the return of creme jak! jtc (aka james t cotton) opens this ep with a devastating 70s disco/funk/jak hybrid, hypnotizing crowds with a repetitive funk guitar and throwing them into a jakking frenzy with a steamrolling basskick counterpoint. simply jak-tastic! followed by a silky chicago dub jakker for the comedown and were ready for 2am/fm. or are we? these two cats rave up the place with some of their patented deep rolling chicago-house influenced trax, but spice it up with a thick-slick muddy bassline before erupting like old yeller. top

finally a full ep by d marc cantu (1/2 of 2am/fm and under other aliases involved in collabos with traxx). technically its the follow up to his cult hit no control (creme jak 02, today a highly sought after 12inch) and in good h-h-h-house fashion this ep contains a ball busting jtc remix of this anthem. but the centre piece must be the title track one of the most emo-simplo jak trax weve ever heard here at the office. starting out simple enough with a single finger synth line (like the musings of a retarded secretary), it mutates into a big wailing distorted saxophone (or a mating whale, who knows?), this puppy will fill your room and throw everybody into an instant k-hole. hey, if that dont sound appealing check the soundclips for proof, its pure liberation... nay rebirth! more floor destroying crazyness on the flipside, but were all out of steam describing it. jak jak jak

this new outstanding enliven music release, called „the dust“, is a cooperation of the three french whizz kidsdop andenliven deep acoustics. they were throwing the old method of original+remix overboard and were developing two completly independent tracks which share the same underlying theme. the dop interpretation comes with a chorus which spins a web of harmony around the listener, the rest of the track is pure groove which leaves no quiet legs, the cherry on the cake is the charming and very sexy vocal by jonathan. the enliven deep acoustics version transports a unique atmosphere by a proper portion of funk. like a diamond on the ring

sychi sychi is the second and exclusive release of denkbar,a new and promising russian label managed by alex danilov and michel misha! the little owls attack and the russians strike again… analog passages, strings and flutes were very harmoniously entered in this hypnotizing atmosphere.
the first one delivered by b.a.d is so groovy, perfect for dancing… it features conversations between two spaniards and this emphasized the atmosphere of this track.
>de color verde< is the second track and was made by one of the labelboss, alex danilov! it offers a warm climate, a pleasant sound of a«short» guitar and sensual piano sequences.
with >weg afro<, the third track by michel, the other part of denkbar, you can imagine the shaman dancing near the fire and a church full of people of african origins! a lot of basses and percussions – giving you an excellent combination.

aux-rec is being launched by airdrop records as an offshoot label designed with a specific mission in mind: to look back and pay tribute. aux-rec surveys musical history looking for those inspiring pieces of music (famous or forgotten) that carry a very distinctive groove and identity, and that offer the potential to be revisited in an ingenious contemporary way. at airdrop, we love music of all ages and of many genres! we feel aux-rec is a way for our artists and for us to pay our due respects to the origins and the evolution of contemporary dance music.
the existing airdrop roster of artists will be invited to contribute to aux-rec, but different artists will also be uncovered specifically for this project. off to a fresh start, franco cinelli and club rayo (a duo composed by rafael sorol and pablo terreil) engrave their long-time friendship on this record. franco cinellis first productions were released on the duos imprint club rayo disquets at the beginning of the millenium. the club rayo collective has been extremely active in the local argentinean scene for more than twelve years now.
going back to one of music historys greatest classics, >fever<, franco cinelli and club rayo bring their own interpretations to a theme that has known as many versions than people taking a sing at it in the shower! using ella fitzgeralds and elvis presleys voices, club rayo create repsectively the fitzgerald mix - a rocking dancefloor jam looping ellas fantastic voice bringing it to a culmination - and the king dub - a 118 bpm groove punctuated by elvis low-pitched and resonant tone. cuerdas is a short guitar instrumantal rendition of the fever theme. on his remix, franco cinelli creates a 10 minutes drum symphony, especially designed for the post-climatic hours. both producers kept in mind ellas famous quote when undertaking this great enterprise: >i stole everything i ever heard, but mostly i stole from the horns.<
the following releases on aux-rec will also be in the form of bootlegs, edits, re-works or samples (you name it). they will bring back memories to your heads and mostly the groove to your feet. to be true to its mission of a vintage exploration, aux-rec will be releasing exclusively on vinyl, in the tradition of the essential music format of the 20th century. there will be no digital releases at aux-rec. in the pipeline are soul claps edit of laid backs >bakerman< as well as le loups version of sheila es >a love bizarre<, produced by prince.

supported by laurent garnier, ben watt, dj yellow, shur i kan, nils nurnberg, florian meindl, mark knight, axwell!!! looking through my harddrive i just realized that this track is more than 2 years old ... shame on us!!! a few people were lucky enough to got it sent back then and the feedback was already exciting! the original version is a pure deephouse anthem drenched with pure soul! starting off with a moody and dark filtered string it leads into a pumpin deephouse groove ready to climax into a beautiful rhodes chord progression and that lovely m.u.s.i.c. vocal. its a perfect blend between deephouse and soul - pretty rare these days and set to become a future classic!! fred everythings mix is slightly more on the disco tip, tight drums and arrangement and a perfect addition to this package. finally we have another colab between the 2 label heads - called electric girl. its a sweet little disco midtempo groover with the typical trademarks of those 2 guys! enjoy this beautiful release - many people have been asking for this for quite a while!!

two of italys most formidable electrosonic programmers, composite profuse & kobol electronics were handpicked by veteran covert intelligence agent wilhelm von erwache to decode the encrypted archives of sismi, the italian secret service, and bring to life these clandestine events onto a 12 inch vinyl disk. on the a side, composite profuse (minimal rome, bunker) uncovers his tracks, blackfriars bridge & patience and charcoals and sets them to an ominous electro soundtrack that his name is synonymous for. the b side sees kobol electronics (minimal rome) deliver two sonic binary programs, code01 & code10 that will devastate both internetworks and dancefloors worldwide.

first 12inch release under jamal moss new religion alter ego iamthatiam, a four track exploration of heavy tribal drums and spiritual dub atmospheres. peter gabriels passion ost and chain reaction were the inspiration, and its heavy on the late 80s techno industrial dance versus noise side.

>realtime art< - that s how blackisbeautiful call their electronic music art. an analogue idea within the digital age. inspired by the aesthetics of analogue music devices, the first album of the dortmund-based producer team will be released in september via the upcoming cologne-based techno label 200. blackisbeautiful partnered up at the vrstck club in dortmund two years ago. they bonded through their deep connection to analogue art. residency atvrstck and a musical and friendly collaboration were to follow. both look back at long-term musicianship and life experience. while tim dicke paved his way into the electronic scene through being a drummer, bassist and soloartist in punk and hardcore bands and later on as dj, Ümit han quickly moved from djing to producing his own tracks. in 2006, Ümit won the remix contest to gabriel anandas >glücksmelodie< and also released tracks on karmarouge, meerestief, harthouse and other labels. blackisbeautiful created two tracks in real handicraft with alerion and purpur: mesmerizing and enthralling at the same time! music that invites you to dance and yet puts you to rest for a closer listen. attention to detail and experiment-happiness get you addicted to blackisbeautiful: occasional street recordings of sounds in everyday life and sampling of snap-shots run through their dynamic sound images.

there seems to be a bit a mystery around this record... and let some of this mystery remain. these two remixes of a fairly obscure song are pretty well known to the public, as for the last year or so they were regulars both in live sets of jacek sienkiewicz, and dj sets of ricardo villalobos. right now these two artists share credits to this obviously outstanding release. >pilgrim< is a vital, mesmerizing, uplifting piece of magic. one can assume, telling from the unusual, muezzin-like chanting, that it comes from some forgotten oriental library record... in fact, it was written in the seventies by a respected polish composer and extraordinary vocalist to the words of 19th century polish poet. now you can hear its modern, not to say futuristic, interpretation by two of the most forward-thinking electronic musicians from two different sides of the globe.

david moleon and dito masats with the 5th releases on the incredible moop-up. full of frantic paces, grooves incredible and deep melodies. 4 powerful tracks that undoubtedly were placed in the first positions of charts of the whole world. david moleon is undoubtedly the producer mas prolifically and versatile of the south of spain. with two big remixes by the superstars borique tribez and killians, the cobra labelboss!

introducing the hells of love! two disco reprimands with an unhealthy penchant for slap bass, synths and drum machines. having both released singles under various guises, michele tessadri (fratelli riviera, bearfunk) and luca sapo saponaro (member of the love supreme project on tirk) decided two disco heads were better than one and headed to the studio to battle it out. the resulting cacophony of squelches and bleeps resulted in the third release on new fledgling jisco affiliated label under the shade.

flint kids are london based electronic music duo dave smith & daniel nolan. they began writing together in 2000 on an akai mpc 2000, s600, korg trinity and 303. years later, after having brought laptops, logic, ableton and other electronic goodies, it became clear that the sounds they were hearing in their heads were possible to recreate. their passion for so many different styles of music saved them from ever being pigeonholed, glitches & bleeps fuse with organic matter fired from a techno blunderbuss to create a pool of binary sputum that finds no home in any one genre. what may begin as a well earned candlelit soak in the tub of ambiance can quickly drain away as they pull the plug, leaving the listener cascading down a dank, jagged hole with only a rung less ladder made of plasticine.... not for the faint hearted!
